Acne is one of the most common conditions of the skin today.
For, Instance as I am writing this article right now, I am dealing with a break out. (silently cries). Acne is usually caused when pores on the skin are blocked by skin cells, excess sebum, and bacteria, which can then lead to an infection in the blocked pores.
The most severe form of acne is cystic acne, this condition can be quite painful and can be identified by large acne lesions that are formed deep inside the skin and results in large bumps on the surface of the skin (I know it sounds extremely gross, but its life). This condition can be challenging to treat, although there are medical options that help to alleviate the pain that accompanies the ailment, they can be pricey, and sometimes still does not resolve the issue.
You would think that these types of acne breakouts would usually occur, during your teenage years because of puberty, which causes a lot of hormonal changes. However, many of us, especially women, deal with these types of breakouts well into adulthood. This can be due to the other hormonal fluctuations we may have such as: pregnancy, menopause, excessive changes in diet, and let’s not forget the most popular reason, which is the general stresses of being an adult.
Through trial and error, wasted money, and many failed attempts of trying to cover the breakout with expensive make-up that only makes it look worse (I know that was a mouthful, but sadly its all true). I have found a few affordable supplements that help me combat the issue from the inside.
Treating Cystic Acne with Supplements
The first product would be the use of probiotics. When people hear of bacteria, they often think of harmful microorganisms. Probiotics are bacteria that benefit your skin and health. They help in the digestion of food; they strengthen the immune system, and they protect the body against external damage. By improving your immune system, probiotics help prevents the occurrence of acne. There are many probiotics on the market, I have found the Renew’s life ultimate flora brand to be effective. (I usually get the 50 billion version, but I believe the lower doses will be just as effective.
Apart from the physical effect of acne, it also affects the patient’s psychological health as it causes low self-esteem. Multivitamins usually contain vitamin A, selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, copper, and more. These vitamins improve the general health of the skin and help in the treatment of acne. In my article on biotin alternatives, I provide a further explanation on how omega- 3 fatty acids, can also be beneficial for hair and nail growth; while promoting clear skin. Some multivitamins I have tried would be centrum silver for women and vitafusions prenatal gummies; which are great for those who have a hard-time-consuming traditional pill form. (they make a male multivitamin version as well).
Zinc is also pretty crucial in the treatment of acne as it helps in the metabolism of omega-3 fatty acids. This essential mineral improves the function of the brain and reproduction. Zinc also helps in the transportation of vitamin A in the body through the liver. This vital element is both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory, making an excellent mineral for the skin.
This is a surprising supplement that I have also found to be highly effective, especially when your hormones are thrown out of place. There are certain toxins in the bloodstream that may cause an unpleasant effect on the skin. Red clover removes these toxins from the blood by detoxifying the liver. I usually take two a day for a week until I feel balanced again. (Take how many the bottle or your physcian recommends).
Last but certainly not least, would be the ever popular but highly underrated use of Lysine. Lysine works alongside dietary protein to build muscles in the body as well as absorb calcium into the body for the bones. Collagen is used in the creation of connective tissue in the body and lysine helps in the building of collagen in the body. Another reason lysine is so-effective is because it helps you battle what they call, “Leaky-gut syndrome.” This is something that many adults deal with that they don’t even realize they have. Leaky gut syndrome can occur when substances such as proteins, gluten, and other harmful toxins caused by the consumption of food items are not able to easily pass through the intestinal system; therefore, it lies there and can pass into your blood stream which can cause inflammation. Lysine combats this issue indirectly by boosting collagen, which promotes the health of your muscle lining. I usually take at least 1000 milligrams when I am having and active acne breakout, and this usually gets rid of the pimple within a few days. Lysine pills can be purchased anywhere, a good note would be to purchase some with maximum absorption.
Although cystic acne can be painful to manage and difficult to treat, you can get supplements that will help you control the condition, (and allow you to eat that cheat meal you have been craving, without all the guilt showing on your face afterwards.)
